Spring is finally here and Summer will soon be approaching, which means (hopefully 🤞) a lot of sun! Not gonna lie, living in England, sunbathing is a bit like dating a guy in the army – it takes ages to get here and usually it doesn’t last long enough to get on your back for!
However, just in case we do manage to get a bit of decent weather, I decided to address some more skincare myths and beliefs – this time all weather related; enjoy!

✅ Dry Air Causes Buildup
If the climate is dry then it makes sense that your skin will also dry out quicker, causing it to look dull and flaky. Dead skin cells will then sit on the surface of the skin, almost creating a “barrier” that stops the good stuff going in – your products won’t work as much as they should and even makeup won’t sit on your face as smoothly (I don’t know this from experience I swear haha.) You need to be exfoliating a bit more regularly when the air is dry to ensure your skin isn’t holding on to all these dead skin cells. It’s not expensive either – my product literally costs me £1 every few weeks!
❌ Tanning booths are safe as long as they don’t contain UVB rays
Everyone knows that tanning in the sun is unhealthy for your skin but what about sun-beds? You will see signs claiming that they are safer due to the fact the UVB rays are filtered out. The fact is, when using a tanning booth you are still exposing your skin to UVA rays which penetrate your skin deeper and still lead to premature ageing and skin cancer. Ladies will know better than guys but, faking it is always better and easier 😅😅.
❌ The higher the SPF, the longer you can stay in the sun.
Absolute bullshit! SPF is absolutely not an indication of how long a product protects your skin but how well it does it. Whilst on the subject – it only actually refers to blocking UVB rays not UVA. Your best bet is to look for a sunscreen that is labelled “broad-spectrum” – this means it covers both types of rays. Regardless of the product, it will still only works best if applied every two hours!
✅ You still need to moisturise, even though skin is greasier.
Keeping your skin hydrated is key because even though it sounds counterintuitive, dehydration in the skin will actually cause even more oil production. A lightweight moisturiser is easy to get your hands on and it will refresh and hydrate your skin without adding a shine.
❌ Makeup can be applied the same as all year round.
Hey just cause I don’t wear it doesn’t mean I don’t know about these things haha! When temperatures increase so can the size of your pores. However, your skincare can help when it comes to finding the right makeup for hot weather! Blend your foundation with your moisturiser to create light, cake-free coverage that will survive the heat without blocking pores. Result!
✅ Deep clean to banish blackheads.
It’s almost inevitable that Summer will mean you will suffer a mini skin breakout. Why? Because in the Summer we tend to sweat more which clogs your pores and causes acne and blackheads. Applying a deep cleansing face mask once a week as part of your summer skincare routine will not only help removing excess oils but also, leave your skin feeling refreshed and revived.
